The oscillator attribute allows the circuit designer to select the type of oscillator to use, connect it to the PIC and then configure the PIC to work with that type of oscillator.The exact selection from which the designer is allowed to choose is dependent on the PIC. Some PICs offer an internal oscillator mode which allows the pins normally reserved for the oscillator function to be used as general digital I/O.
